Well shoot, I started to write about this buck I got during the 2017 Oregon muzzleloader season, got about halfway through it and accidentally erased it LOL. So this is the short version. Basically ran into this buck chasing a doe and darn near had to kill him in self defense, shot him at less than eight steps away, drove a 50 cal 385 grain chunk of lead right through his chest as he was facing directly at me, he still managed to run about 60 yards before he died.
I was by myself about 2 miles from the pickup, made for a long day let me tell ya. Funny thing is is that there was a whitetail buck with him and the doe, first time I had ever seen anything like that.
Anyway, pretty good deer and a fun season.

Love that Cottage Grove country.  Expect to be back next year after a two year absence.  Short, but sweet story.  Memorable day for you.  Just doesn't get better than that.  Congratulations!

New ideas don't take hold because people become convinced of them, they take hold because the people believing the old stuff die.

Yup meat buck, it's a piece of cake. Any idiot can do it, shit I heard a rumor that Ray Charles even killed a big blacktail in November ( before he died of course)

i like you roadkill

you make me laugh

pics are great and story is fun

they say whitetail invading the west . thought i seen their white tails sticking up over a couple butts running into hiding a few years ago while camping .  think its only a matter of time before they all over our blacktail area maybe cross breeding .

BTW , any estimate on weight of that nice 4x4 ???

Yup BBH, I have seen these damn whitetail the last few years in places that I have never seen them before. We have killed several of them over the years and they do taste great.
This buck I killed this year was physically small, I think he was probably around 140lbs alive. The one I killed last year was around 185, he was a big boy. He was 6.5 years old, I'm guessing the one from this year is probably 4.5

Ummm why do you have to be such a douche bag?? I have been on BTC for years and there is always someone who has to criticize the way other people hunt. If it's not someone who hunts with a bow saying how freekin easy it is to kill a deer with a high powered rifle, it's someone who rifle hunts criticizing how easy it is to kill a buck during the late bow season, I find the people who open their mouths always have an excuse as to why they can't do it themselves. I personally find it extremely easy to kill the smaller, younger bucks like you got, but I wouldn't say that, oh shit, I guess I just did😂 Sorry, enough of this BS 👍

I killed this one in late September with nothing but my bare hands and a butter knife, of course that was when I was younger. I'm tired of doing things the hard way😂😂😂😂

Here in California... Pretty much sums it up.

In my case, I am limited to hunting poorly managed government ground in the middle of summer... And not a pnw summer. We're lucky if the night time temps get into the 60s until the last few days of the season. That's when the smaller bucks start to chase does a little bit. And then it's over.

This is when you're just getting started up in Oregon. By mid to late November you have full blown rut activity and the bucks as you say are nearly running you over in their quest for wet hole.

I just spent 8 days hunting the late muzzleloader here(a two week season) and in comparison to hunting our A zone archery and general season, its a walk in the park. Hardly had to leave the truck. Saw hundreds of deer and dozens of bucks. Just a shame it wasn't my tag, rather the tag if my asthmatic ol lady.

She was still able to harvest a very respectable buck after missing a giant and having an asthma attack while stalking another.

And I will remind you that she drew one if two tags available for the M-11 hunt. Rut hunts here are very limited.

Perhaps you should stop being so butthurt about a simple statement and start being grateful for the hunting opportunities you have there in Oregon.

When your looking at it from California... That's exactly right.

And the further north you go the greener it gets

115deg would suck for sure, besides the fact that during the rut here in Oregon you will generally see between 15 and 20 140"+ bucks strolling around on any given day, I love hunting in the rain and fog, hunting in 100+ temps is not appealing to me at all.
They do have a over the counter archery tag that not only runs almost the entire month of September, but also from mid November to sometime into December. So come on up meatbuck and slay one of these gargantuan Oregon blacktail, they are about as sharp as a pound of wet leather LOL.
