About Me

I didn't get into hunting at at early age for a number of reasons but mostly I think due to growing up in a military family and moving a lot and not being exposed to my extended family, who all hunted, as much as I would have liked. My grandfather lived through the great depression so to him hunting was to eat and not for sport, when he taught my dad to hunt he was punished for missing due to wasting ammo so decided not to hunt at all to remedy that situation. So with the physical separation from the extended family hunting was never passed down any farther. I was exposed to hunting while serving a tour in the Navy and meeting the acquaintance of now my oldest friend who filled my head full of adventure and the writings of the likes as Jack O'Connor, Jim Corbet, Peter Capstick and others. I've been addicted ever since.
After finishing my tour in the Navy I moved up to Santa Rosa and met a guy who took me on my first hunt and this started my education and obsession with hunting.
It took me a couple of years before connecting with my first blacktail, pretty lucky in finding a young stupid forked horn to fuel the passion and keep me from getting frustrated. The writings of high adventure never left me though and I found myself re-connecting with my buddy from the Navy who lived in Fairbanks, Alaska. Since he was more of a gun nut than a hunter he introduced me to a hunter he knew, I soon found myself heading to Alaska every 2 years to get out into the middle of nowhere on do it yourself hunts with this new hunting companion. We did about five wilderness hunts together before he decided to hang it up, he is older than I am.
Even though I've heard many of the stories of Capstick are either fiction or borrowed experiences, which I don't really care if that is the case as he was a very entertaining writer, he filled my dreams of African adventure so I had to go. I made my first safari to Zimbabwe over a decade ago now, a couple years later I had to return as it gets into your blood and haunts your dreams. I dream of Africa every night still, calculate budgets daily on plans to return again.
I take advantage of any hunting opportunities I can whenever possible such as the Roe deer hunt in England I posted the story about on the old web page. I have also hunted Arizona and hope to hunt many other states when I get the chance.
As far as blacktail hunting goes I mostly hunt California A zone but have made trips up to the Mendocino forest, Modoc as well as backpacking into the Marble Mountain Wilderness a number of times.
Currently all my hunting buddies have either moved away or given up hunting as too much work and took up drowning worms instead, so I have been hunting solo for the past couple of years now.
