Two big bucks in less than two hours,
By Scott Eller

Scott Ellers boys show off dads big southern Oregon Buck.

I got this buck at about 3:00pm Wednesday afternoon, we had killed the three point at about 2:00 and decided to drop off the top of a ridge and hunt until dark then go back into camp and hang up the deer.

I was sitting on a old windfall looking down through the dusky timber when I saw what I thought was the tip of a shed antler sticking up through the salal bushes about ten feet to my left. I got up and walked over to check it out, leaving my -06 laying against the log (the shed antler turned out to be the tip old a stick) this was a mistake.

Ray who was sitting a few feet up the hill from me (he had no gun due to the fact he had no tag left) suddenly in a very stressed voice said as quietly as he could "Scottie hold it" I looked up and standing not over forty yards directly in front of me was the biggest Blacktail I had ever seen in the wild. I tried desperately not to swallow my tongue, I don't know where the hell he came from, he was just there (did I happen to mention my gun was about ten feet away?).

I just nonchalantly strolled back over to the -06 (even though I really wanted to run back to it screaming like a banshee) never looking at the deer again and picked it up. When I centered the crosshairs behind his front shoulder he spun and bolted and I squeezed the trigger, just like that he was gone. I looked over at Ray " I don't know if I hit him". "Hell Scottie, he was to close to miss, you got him" Ray assured me.

We walked over and looked down the hill and I saw nothing then Ray said "There he is, $#%%$^%&^ look at the size of that buck". Sure enough about fifty yards down the hill he was laying on his side. I looked at Ray and said "remember this day, two big bucks in less than two hours, this is what we live for
